Short answer: AI search traffic is undercounted because most AI assistants pass little or no referrer data. ChatGPT relies on a utm_source=chatgpt.com tag, and when that tag disappeared between October 8 and 15, 2026, Adobe data showed about 31,000 fewer ChatGPT visits a day and 26,000 more Direct visits across 500 pages. Google AI Overviews and AI Mode clicks are counted inside Search Console’s regular web search data. To measure AI search accurately, combine GA4 source rules, Search Console, Bing’s AI Performance report and AI crawler logs.

What the ChatGPT tracking bug revealed
When GPT-6 rolled out (paid plans October 7, free and Go plans October 8), ChatGPT links stopped carrying utm_source=chatgpt.com. Because ChatGPT also opens links without a referrer, analytics tools counted those visits as Direct.
- Adobe data: across about 500 pages where ChatGPT drove at least 5% of visits, ChatGPT visits fell by about 31,000 a day and Direct rose by about 26,000 a day (October 9 to 13 versus the prior week), according to Adobe’s Cedric Huesler.
- Other trackers: Graphite estimated ChatGPT GA4 sessions fell about 45%, and Profound saw the share of tagged answers drop from about 98% to 66%.
- The fix: OpenAI told Huesler on October 14 it was a bug. A fix rolled out October 15 and tagged clicks returned to about 95 to 100% of normal. OpenAI made no public statement.
The lesson: sessions lost to Direct during that week are not coming back into the ChatGPT bucket, and ChatGPT still sends no referrer on most clicks. Any AI reporting that depends on one tag can break overnight.
How each AI platform shows up in your analytics
| Platform | How visits are identified | Where to look |
|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT | utm_source=chatgpt.com tag; referrer usually missing | GA4 source/medium; Direct spikes on AI-heavy pages |
| Gemini | UTM parameters added around October 2026 (undocumented by Google) | GA4 source; referrer mostly on desktop web |
| Google AI Overviews and AI Mode | Counted as normal Google organic clicks | Search Console Performance, Web search type |
| Bing and Copilot answers | Citations reported by Microsoft | Bing Webmaster Tools AI Performance report |
| Perplexity, Claude, Copilot web | Usually a referrer from their domain | GA4 referral source |
Google’s documentation is explicit that sites appearing in AI features “are included in the overall search traffic in Search Console.” There is no separate AI Overviews click metric.
New AI visibility reports you can use now
Bing Topics Portfolio (beta)
Launched October 13, 2026 inside Bing Webmaster Tools’ AI Performance report. It groups the grounding queries that cite your site into topics, with Topic Size, Sites Cited, Queries and Top Opportunity Queries. Microsoft calls the numbers “directional signals for planning, not as a precise ledger.”
Clarity brand terms
Microsoft Clarity’s AI Visibility settings now let you add abbreviations, typos and translations of your brand, so branded and non-branded AI queries are split correctly.
Search Console multimodal
Since September 24, 2026, the Web search type splits into Text-based and Multimodal, which covers Lens, Circle to Search, image uploads and Chrome’s Search this image.
Gemini UTMs
Search Engine Journal reported on October 1 that Gemini now adds UTM parameters to outbound links, which Google’s John Mueller said he could see too.
Why rank trackers may be wrong right now
Nozzle reported that since September 13, 2026, Google has served altered results pages to automated rank trackers. Across 27 million results pages, Nozzle judged 8.4% as altered, compared with a 0.17% baseline, peaking at 28.6% on September 29. On altered pages only 22% of organic results stayed the same (88.1% normally), and tracked sites dropped out of the top 10 on 60.2% of them (2.7% normally). Nozzle notes: “Nothing on the page gives it away.”
Google has not commented. Until it does, validate any sudden ranking drop against Search Console impressions and clicks before acting.
A 10-step checklist for measuring AI search traffic
- Create a GA4 custom channel group called AI Assistants, placed above Referral, matching AI sources such as chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai, gemini.google.com, copilot.microsoft.com and claude.ai.
- Match on utm_source as well as referrer, because ChatGPT relies on the tag.
- Annotate October 8 to 15, 2026 in your reports as the ChatGPT tracking gap.
- Watch the Direct share on pages that ChatGPT usually sends visitors to, as a proxy for untagged AI visits.
- Use Bing Webmaster Tools AI Performance (Citations and Topics Portfolio) to see where Copilot and Bing answers cite you.
- Use Search Console’s Web search type for Google AI Overviews and AI Mode clicks, and the Multimodal filter for Lens traffic.
- Set up brand terms in Microsoft Clarity’s AI Visibility dashboard.
- Check server or CDN logs for AI crawlers such as OAI-SearchBot and ChatGPT-User.
- Cross-check rank tracker swings against Search Console before reacting.
- Track brand mentions and citations in AI answers with a consistent set of buyer prompts each month.

Measuring AI search traffic FAQ
Why did my ChatGPT traffic drop in October 2026?
Most likely a tracking bug. From about October 8 to 15, 2026, ChatGPT stopped adding utm_source=chatgpt.com to outbound links, so analytics tools counted those visits as Direct. OpenAI confirmed it was a bug to Adobe’s Cedric Huesler, and a fix rolled out on October 15.
How do I track ChatGPT traffic in GA4?
Create a custom channel group for AI assistants that matches the source chatgpt.com, including visits tagged utm_source=chatgpt.com, and place it above Referral. Because ChatGPT usually sends no referrer, the UTM tag is the main way to identify its visits.
Can I see Google AI Overviews traffic separately?
No. Google says clicks from AI Overviews and AI Mode are included in the overall web search traffic in Search Console. There is no separate AI Overviews click report.
What is Bing’s Topics Portfolio?
A beta feature launched October 13, 2026 in Bing Webmaster Tools’ AI Performance report. It groups the AI grounding queries that cite your site into topics and shows topic size, sites cited and opportunity queries where competitors are cited and you are not.
Does Gemini pass referral data?
Search Engine Journal reported on October 1, 2026 that Gemini began adding UTM parameters to outbound links. Google has not documented the exact values, so check your GA4 source data for gemini.google.com.
Are rank trackers accurate in October 2026?
Less than usual. Nozzle reported that 8.4% of Google results pages served to its trackers since September 13, 2026 were altered, against a normal 0.17%. Confirm ranking changes in Google Search Console before acting on them.
