Online, your company may be headed for big things with a social media campaign, but at Lake Superior State University in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan you have no chance of ever going viral – the ever popular social marketing term has been relegated to their annual list of “banished words.”
The list of banished words was selected from more than 1,000 online nominations of terms so overused in 2010, their nominators think they should be banned in 2011. Second to last on the list of 14 banished words was using Facebook/Google as verbs – something we’re very guilty of doing around here.
The full Lake Superior State University 2011 List of Banished Words is as follows:
4. Wow Factor
5. A-Ha Moment
6. Back Story
7. BFF (Best Friends Forever)
8. Man Up
9. Refudiate (Sarah Palin’s attempt to become the 21st century’s Shakespeare – also named 2010’s best new word by the New Oxford American Dictionary)
10. Mama Grizzlies
11. The American People
12. I’m Just Sayin’
13. Facebook/Google as verbs
14. Live Life to the Fullest
If you refudiate this list, some might think it’s an epic fail (I’m just sayin’). But the wow factor of this list really gave us an a-ha moment. We are going to man up, live life to the fullest, and Google all through 2011, helping our clients Facebook, Tweet and blog their way to top rankings in the search engines.
