The Google+ Project is Finally Revealed

Like a meticulously crafted fine beer, it’s been brewing behind the scenes for sometime now. Yes all, the Google+ Project is now here, and it just may change the face of organic SEO.

But let us digress… Organic SEO has been revolutionized by social media and social media marketing. While external links used to be the primary form of outside ranking influence in regards to Google, Bing, Yahoo!, etc., social media came in like a fire storm, allowing users on the likes of Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn to play a role in the ranking evaluation of online properties. When this happened, Google knew they needed to have more influence in this process. Google had lost control of their own ranking system. The Google+ Project is an attempt to regain its dominance and in the process stimulate a whole new business model for the online giant.

The Google Plus Project may Just Change the Face of SEO and Social Media, But only Time will Tell

Google Plus One is NOT the Google+ Project

First there was Google Plus One, now there is the Google+ Project. Let’s be clear here. Google Plus One is a function that can exist in two places online, in search results next to a webpage listing and as a share button type icon on an actual webpage. Google Plus One is very different from the Google Plus Project

What is the Google+ Project?

The Google+ Project is Google’s answer to Facebook; it’s a new wave of social media. I have had the chance to scope it out and to be honest it looks pretty cool. Perhaps the best part is the integration with mobile. If you can do it on a desktop, you can do it on a Droid Operating System and other smart phones. But before we get into all that, let’s talk about the functionality it offers.

Google+ Project Functionality

As an inherent part of this post we have to compare Facebook and Google+ Project functionality, but for now, we are going to keep that discussion quite limited. Let’s just say that they offer basically the same thing, but in very different forms. It is important to keep in mind when evaluating this that the Google+ Project falls under the greater umbrella of Google, so many of the things that are not addressed in the new Google+ Project interface can be accomplished through a Google account. That being said, here are the main new functions that Google+ offers. All of the descriptions are quotes from Google.

Circles
“You share different things with different people. So sharing the right stuff with the right people shouldn’t be a hassle. Circles makes it easy to put your friends from Saturday night in one circle, your parents in another, and your boss in a circle by himself – just like real life.” – Google

So this is similar to Facebook groups, right?

Hangouts
“With Hangouts, the unplanned meet-up comes to the web for the first time. Let specific buddies (or entire circles) know you’re hanging out and then see who drops by for a face-to-face-to-face chat. Until teleportation arrives, it’s the next best thing.” – Google

Hangouts are basically the same as Facebook instant messaging.

Instant Uploads
“Taking photos is fun. Sharing photos is fun. Getting photos off your phone is pretty much the opposite of fun. With Instant Upload, your photos and videos upload themselves automatically, to a private album on Google+. All you have to do is decide who to share them with.” – Google

Can you say Facebook album?

Sparks
“Tell Sparks what you’re into and it will send you stuff it thinks you’ll like, so when you’re free, there’s always something cool to watch, read, or share.” – Google

This one is really interesting. It represents a whole new search feature that Google is offering. This will result in a new form of Google+ Project SEO, which will have a more social focus. The next steps will be for search engine optimization experts to try to optimize their posts for this engine.

Huddle
“Texting is great, but not when you’re trying to get six different people to decide on a movie. Huddle turns all those different conversations into one simple group chat, so everyone gets on the same page all at once. Your thumbs will thank you.” – Google

This is a basic group conversation tool.

The Google+ Project is here to stay. Social media marketers must learn how this works and integrate it quickly with their SEO and overall online strategy. At this point, it is more of a user based tool, but you can be sure it will become more B2C and B2B friendly soon.
