Social Networks Command Most Attention on the Internet!

We all knew it was coming, right? With the momentum spiraling out of control pertaining to user sign ups, content sharing and overall interaction on sites like Twitter and Facebook, each of us had the notion in the back of our minds, “these sites are taking over,” we thought. Well now they finally have.

Today it was reported by The Nielsen Company that social networking sites such as Twitter, Facebook and LinkedIn, now demand 22.7% of time spent on the web. Take a moment to let that really sink in. This means that the worldwide accumulation of the online population, some 1,966,514,816 people according to Internet World Stats, spends more than a fifth of their time on social networks, amazing.

But this report also released more interesting information which seems to suggest a new world of Internet marketing is emerging. Email marketing, so long known as a staple point for any successful online operation, saw its percentage of online engagement plummet from 11.5% to a striking 8.3% from June 2009 to June 2010. One can only speculate that this decline may continue as social networks continue to grow. While this is true, it should be noted that mobile email marketing is still slightly on the rise, with time spent engaged in mobile email growing just over 4%, according to a recent report by Mashable.

Facebook is Still #1

Perhaps most interesting is the report of top social media sites according to Nielsen. Facebook is clearly the dominant in this space, but it is important to keep in mind that sites like Myspace and Classmates are still strong players, yes Classmates. According to the Neilson 2009 year end report, the sites rank respectively:  Facebook, Myspace, Twitter, Classmates and Linkedin, when compared in scales of vistors.
