Pinterest Publishes First Transparency Report

Pinterest, the idea-sharing and inspiration-gathering giant of a social media outlet, is joining the likes of Facebook and Twitter and has released its first company transparency report. On Friday, 3/7/14, a Pinterest Project Manager said in a blog post, “Every company that stores information — from banks to phone companies to email providers — must respond to requests for that information from folks like law enforcement agencies, courts, and others … We think it’s important that you know about these requests.”

Is the government looking for information from Pinterest users? Maybe. Between July and December of 2013, though, the government made only 12 requests for information, none from international, and only one from Federal.

If you’re worried about Big Brother on Pinterest, rest easy. These 12 requests pale in comparison to the 1,410 requests in the same 6 month period that Twitter had requested. Then when you consider the 38,000 requests made to Facebook, the 12 for Pinterest seems pret-ty, pret-ty, pret-ty not bad.

We’d like your thoughts: Why do you think Pinterest only has 12 requests, while other Social Media Giants are in the thousands? Sound off in the comments section.
