Google Artificial Intelligence Breakthrough to Apply to SEO

Have you seen the Terminator movies? My little brother used to love it. He would run around the house pretending he was the liquid guy. You know the guy in Terminator 2 who starting looking like shiny goo and then turned into a deadly metal object? Well, thank goodness Google has not invented any liquid guys yet, trust me they are annoying, but they have been making some major strides in artificial intelligence and self learning systems. Which, when it is all said and done, it’s pretty creepy but also may have SEO implications.

So what is this all about? Well, according to the New York Times Google is not only working on self driving cars. They are also creating computer brains that simulate humans and have the capacity to learn. In this post we are talking about one project in particular where they turned these 16,000 computer processors (the Google computer brain simulator) loose on YouTube. Guess what happened? Well, the computers started looking for cats.

“Google scientists created one of the largest neural networks for machine learning by connecting 16,000 computer processors, which they turned loose on the Internet to learn on its own.”

“Presented with 10 million digital images found in YouTube videos, what did Google’s brain do? What millions of humans do with YouTube: looked for cats.”

Basically, these computers are like infants trying to figure out what they are supposed to do with themselves. What they did was look for videos of cats. Something many humans do who have an excess of time. Many people feel that this research is a representation of a new generation of computer science that is ramping up due to the falling cost of computing. The technique is referred to as “deep learning.”

From the New York Times article:

“We never told it during the training, ‘This is a cat,’ ” said Dr. Dean, who originally helped Google design the software that lets it easily break programs into many tasks that can be computed simultaneously. “It basically invented the concept of a cat.”

The Google brain assembled this vision of a cat after looking at millions of YouTube videos. It is essentially what scientist call a “grandmother neuron” that occurs when the brain is exposed to an image repeatedly.

So you are probably wondering why an SEO company in San Diego cares about this topic! Well, first because it is really interesting and cool, but secondly, because this clearly has SEO implications.

“Google scientists said that the research project had now moved out of the Google X laboratory and was being pursued in the division that houses the company’s search business and related services. Potential applications include improvements to image search, speech recognition and machine language translation.” – The New York Times

Google is definitely considering using this technology to improve SEO. In fact, we are already seeing it right now. Google and Bing are both modifying your current and future search results based on the way you have searched and interacted with search results in the past.

I had a brief IM conversation with James Baker on this topic. James is our head of technology.

In response to the article…

Overall, we really don’t know how this technology will develop or be used. But you can bet one thing, computers are learning more everyday. And they can digest and sort data a lot faster than us.
