It seems like Google is in just about every Internet-based business nowadays. They’ve gone into VoIP; they are pushing into social media, they offer calendars, group deals, file storage – you get the point. Their newest addition to their robust service offering is one of the more inline ventures they have pursued; we are talking about page speed as a service.
For those of you who don’t know, page speed has been a Google initiative for some time. A couple of years ago they made a simple but effective page speed plugin for Firefox. They also made page speed part of the Google algorithm, stating websites with page speed issues could experience negative rankings. Now Google is taking their page speed offering to an entirely new level, with page speed as a service. Here we see a quote from Google on the topic.
“Two years ago we released the Page Speed browser extension and earlier this year the Page Speed Online API to provide developers with specific suggestions to make their web pages faster. Last year we released mod_pagespeed, an Apache module to automatically rewrite web pages. To further simplify the life of webmasters and to avoid the hassles of installation, today we are releasing the latest addition to the Page Speed family: Google Page Speed Service.”So what is this “Google Page Speed Service”? According to Google, “Page Speed Service is an online service that automatically speeds up loading of your web pages. To use the service, you need to sign up and point your site’s DNS entry to Google. Page Speed Service fetches content from your servers, rewrites your pages by applying web performance best practices, and serves them to end users via Google’s servers across the globe.”
Google goes on to mention that users will be able to access your website just as before, only with faster load times. By using Google page speed, you will not need to worry about concentrating CSS, minimizing images, caching, gzipping, etc., Google will take care of this for you. Google boasts that they generally see page speed performance increases of 25% to 60%.
Why Page Speed as a Service Makes Sense for Google
Google wants a faster Internet. If pages load faster, it makes it easier for a Googlebot to crawl them. It also makes it easier for a browser to display the page after it has been clicked on in a Google search result.
This new method of web delivery also gives Google a great deal of power. Google will be hosting the websites themselves and delivering the web pages themselves. You can be sure that there will be some fee associated with this in the future. However, as of right now it is free.
“At this time, Page Speed Service is being offered to a limited set of webmasters free of charge. Pricing will be competitive, and details will be made available later. You can request access to the service by filling out this.
How Internet Marketers Can use Google Page Speed as Service
For those of you who have worked to make page speed improvements on clients’ websites you know it can be tedious. Google Page Speed Service makes it easy to speed up a site, as you are outsourcing the work to Google. This could be a good option when you don’t feel like allocating your engineers’ time to improving page speed.
Overall, we don’t know much about this service yet. It will be interesting to see how well Google deals with the diversity of websites that comes in the door, and how fast they can make them. Finally, price always will be an issue.
