Oh, Yahoo. Have you no heart?
In the name of “continued product focus,” Yahoo has decided to part with her original Internet offering: Yahoo Directory, her hand-picked list of websites, tidily compiled into topics. It’s a shame, considering it used to be the go-to resource for intrepid internet explorers.
But nostalgia be damned: Yahoo’s closing it after years of faithful service, and apparently she’s put it up on craigslist until December 31. While the Directory has historical significance (it predated most other search tools, including Google), closing it will allow her to spend more time on search, communications, digital magazines, and video.
You know that Joni Mitchell song “Big Yellow Taxi?” The one that goes, “you don’t know what you’ve got ‘til it’s gone?”
That’s how we feel about Yahoo Directory.
It was more than just a guide book to the Internet; it was like a secret club. It had a secret password and everything! But feel-good memories don’t pay the bills, I guess. We appreciate Yahoo re-focusing her efforts on things people actually use, but goodbyes are hard.
So long, and thanks for the good times, Yahoo Directory. Tell AltaVista we said hi.
