Facebook gets a lot more expressive today with the release of “reactions.” Now you can Like, Love, Haha, Wow, Sad, or Angry posts on your News Feed. All of these are extensions of the like button. We at SEO Inc. have been trying it out, and everything seems to be working smoothly. Give it a try here!
So how do you use these new reactions? No need to hook up a camera. On desktop, simply hover over the like button and choose the reaction you see fit. On mobile, all you have to do is hold down the like button and react away.
Facebook’s announcement states they’ve “been listening to people and know that there should be more ways to easily and quickly express how something in News Feed makes you feel.” For Facebook users who feel more comfortable posting emoticons and smilies, these new reactions should get a lot of use.
Facebook reactions were released early in Ireland, Spain, the Philippines, and other countries, and response has been positive. CNN reports “Love” is the most popular reaction.
What About More Negative Facebook Reactions?
You’ll notice there’s no ‘dislike’ button included in these reactions. People had been asking for it for a while, as it would certainly help them “easily and quickly express” how they feel about certain posts. But ‘Angry’ is the closest we got. What’s the deal?
The dislike was actually expected to release back in September, but CEO Mark Zuckerberg has said Facebook shouldn’t become a place where posts are “voted,” like Reddit. “That doesn’t seem like the kind of community we want to create,” he has said. Considering the kind of posts that can show up on your News Feed, we wouldn’t want to have to explain to Grandma why we downvoted her controversial politically charged opinion into oblivion.
Moving forward, the new Facebook react icons should make for some interesting, if succinct, conversations.
