Facebook Developers Section: Facebook Applications you will Love

Recently I’ve been spending a lot of time in the new Facebook developers section. Why? Well, I want to know what is available, and how it can support search engine optimization and social media strategy. What I’ve found is that there is a ton to offer.

Facebook Plugins

The plugins section is the most interesting to me. This section gives you access to widgets that can greatly improve your site’s integration with Facebook. Facebook explains this section well here:

“Social plugins let you see what your friends have liked, commented on or shared on sites across the web. All social plugins are extensions of Facebook and are specifically designed so none of your data is shared with the sites on which they appear.”

There are two plugins that are popping up all over the web. Those are the Facebook “Like Button” and the “Like Box.” Both of these plugins have a ton to offer from a sharing and community building perspective.

Facebook Like Button

The Facebook like button is a simple concept really. According to Facebook, “The Like button enables users to make connections to your pages and share content back to their friends on Facebook with one click. Since the content is hosted by Facebook, the button can display personalized content whether or not the user has logged into your site. For logged-in Facebook users, the button is personalized to highlight friends who have also liked the page.”

So what does this mean? Well basically if you add this widget to your website and someone clicks on it, it will allow that person to share that page of content with their friends on Facebook. If only link building were that easy for search engine optimization… But the widget does more than that. It also displays how many people have shared that page on Facebook and who those people are. Pretty cool right?!

Facebook Like Box

The Facebook Like Box is really exciting. We have seen that sites which implement this dramatically see their community grow on Facebook. Facebook describes the Like Box as, a social plugin that enables Facebook Page owners to attract and gain Likes from their own website. The Like Box enables users to:

  • See how many users already like this page, and which of their friends like it too
  • Read recent posts from the page
  • Like the page with one click, without needing to visit the page

You have to see this plugin in action. The widget lets you see which of your friends already like the page associated with the website. If you click “Like” you are automatically added to the list of people who like the page along with your friends. This plays right into the idea of convince and convert, an internet marketing strategy that has been around for years.

Keep your eye on Facebook

The new Facebook developers section is very cool. Facebook is lowering the barrier to entry to become integrated with Facebook everyday. This post only touches on a few of the exciting opportunities in this section. We have had a lot of fun working with this new section to improve business owners’ social media presence, and ultimately, integrating it with their search engine marketing.
