Apple Says Flash is Bad

It is a rare occasion that Steve Jobs comes to anyone’s rescue but I will say that today I am thanking him for helping all SEO Consultants by laying out his objections to flash. Mr. Jobs recently posted an open letter on the subject of flash in which he states “Flash was created during the PC era – for PCs and mice. Flash is a successful business for Adobe, and we can understand why they want to push it beyond PCs. But the mobile era is about low power devices, touch interfaces and open web standards – all areas where Flash falls short.” The letter outlines six reasons why flash is no longer necessary including the facts that it is not an open platform, drains battery life and does not work with the modern “touch” devices that most of us are using now.

For years, we have been trying to tell prospects and clients alike that flash websites are not good for search engine optimization. Yes, there are now some creative work around solutions that do provide some SEO benefits but these are not ideal. In addition to the reasons outlined in Mr. Jobs’ open letter, there are plenty of other negatives for flash with regards to providing SEO services.

1. Very few developers actually understand flash well enough to implement search engine optimization best practices.

2. Very few flash developers understand SEO strategy

3. While you can get search engines to read html embedded in flash and therefor read content, there are limitations to the optimization of site architecture specifically

Bottom line…Apple has only added more reasons to the flash is not good argument. Thank You Steve Jobs!
