Hi Thomas. You bring up a great point. There are many social media sites, outside of the big five, that create do follow links in some capacity. I'm glad you commented on this!

Heinrich, I agree with you that Google is taking a strong interest in social media. In the future, I believe they will continue to adapt their algorithm to support these sites.

David. Yes, we are excited to see what comes next too! That is why I, we, love Internet marketing. There are so many new developments. It is an incredibly exciting field to be a part of.

Thanks for the comments!

Social media is a great marketing and optimization platform and it is great that Google has started to recognize social media links. It is beneficial to have an extended link building strategy and links from social media sites should form part of this strategy even if it is no follow. Thanks for the informative article.

This is NOT news. Anybody with any SEO knowledge has known for quite some time that social media links count in SEO. Also, many of these links ARE do follow. I'll grant you that Twitter, Facebook and LinkedIn are no follow, but there are social sites of all genres that practice do follow; social mircroblogs such as Identi.ca, social aggrevators such as Amplify, social blogs such as Posterous, social bookmarks such as Propeller and social content sites such as Mixx, etc, etc. that all honor their users with do follow links.

I agree that this additional channel of search could help in optimizing search efforts. The benefits of blog post in social media, CMS systems like Wordpress and good site management are tangible and effective.

There was a good article posted on Google's intent to develop a social network.

If Google could take advantage of their current ownership of all things search, with an effective social media component, they would have massive reach not only for search, but display ad placement as well. It would be difficult for the Facebook "like" search architecture to compete.

I am looking forward to seeing what they come up with.
