  • 10/17/2006 - Search Portal, Chosen by U.S. Department of Defense
Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania - October 17, 2006 - Search software and expertise firm, Vivisimo.com, has been selected by the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD), to improve the search and navigation capabilities of its MilitaryHOMEFRONT portal.

The Velocity Search Platform, designed as the most comprehensive source of information for the U.S. military's Quality of Life (QoL) programs, the fully enhanced and user-friendly site was originally launched in January 2005. The site serves as the military's central, trusted and up-to-date source for Service members and their families to obtain information about all DoD QoL programs and services. Visitors to the site can browse job openings, read e-newsletters, participate in online discussion forums, review legislation and policies, read from the QoL Library and investigate many other useful areas of information.

According to the company, Velocity is expected to provide visitors of MilitaryHOMEFRONT, with a clean, uncluttered search experience that delivers better and more relevant information. The site uses Vivisimo's search engine to pull content from a wide variety of sources and then present search results organized visually for a faster, more thorough exploration of search results. Now, visitors to the site have several new ways to search and view information including: content-specific search tabs broken out by areas of interest, such as military installation community directories, news feeds, jobs and QoL Web search; keyword matching, which searches and returns tailored information from the QoL glossary based on a simple keyword entry; and cluster navigation, which presents results by topic and by agency.

Lieutenant Colonel Ramon Lao, Information Technology Center Program Manager of the Office of the Deputy Under Secretary of Defense, Military Community and Family Policy commented, ''By using the Vivisimo Velocity Search Platform, we were able to improve even further upon an extremely popular and important service that virtually all Service members and their families will use at one time or another. The new site provides streamlined access and improved navigation to help visitors get what they need from the plethora of available information as quickly as possible. With new search functionality available on the portal, we are confident that we can deliver on our promise to enhance the quality of life for the total force and support current military members, their families and retirees.''

According to Vivisimo, its Velocity is the industry's first enterprise search platform that provides organizations with the flexibility and control of enterprise software and the simplicity and innovation of consumer search. The MilitaryHOMEFRONT portal search was built using Velocity 5, the latest version of Vivisimo's enterprise search platform. Introduced in June 2006, Velocity 5 was designed to enable end users to access and manipulate both structured and unstructured content at the same time by using new graphical interface controls. In addition, new meta-data visualization techniques, combined with clustering, give users the big picture for a faster and more thorough exploration of search results. Velocity 5 also serves as the foundation for the award-winning FirstGov.gov web site that went live earlier this year.

Raul Valdes-Perez, CEO and Co-founder of Vivisimo added, ''The DoD is providing U.S. military personnel and their families with unparalleled access to the most up-to-date uality of life information available. MilitaryHOMEFRONT is another shining example of the fact that, with the right search technology and expertise, government and other publicly funded web sites can deliver an incredibly rich user experience.''

Vivisimo endeavors to incorporate simplicity and innovation of consumer search with the flexibility and control of enterprise software. The company works with customers to understand their goals and quickly deploy solutions that maximize the business value of information with an interface users love. Vivisimo serves its global client base through headquarters in Pittsburgh, PA, and Paris, France, and partners throughout the world.
