  • Search Engine, Baidu, Chooses Foundry Networks

  • 10/17/2006 - Search Engine, Baidu, Chooses Foundry Networks
San Francisco, California - October 17, 2006 - Foundry Networks, a performance and total solutions firm, has been deployed by Chinese language Internet search provider, Baidu, using its 10 Gigabit Ethernet (10GbE) LAN and application switching solutions.

Baidu is using Foundry's 10GbE high-performance switches for its connections between their network backbone and server farms. To maximize large-scale network and server performance, Foundry's application switches are leveraged for load balancing massive amounts of traffic between servers while protecting Baidu from malicious Denial of Service (DoS) attacks that may cause service disruption and compromise sensitive information and data.

Baidu's extensive network currently handles up to 50 percent of Internet search activities throughout China. After extensive testing, it was clear that Foundry's solutions delivered the performance needed to meet Baidu's current requirements, while also future-proofing its network and server farm infrastructure to incrementally scale with its constantly increasing traffic demands.

JianGuo Liu, Chief Technology Officer for Baidu explained, ''As the leading Chinese language Internet search provider, high availability and on-demand scalability are fundamental requirements for us. Foundry's high-performance networking solution provides our business the performance we demand and easily supports our current traffic load with ample room for growth.''

Highly available and scalable performance is critical to the success of Baidu. Foundry's advanced 10GbE switches and application switches allow Baidu to scale server farm capacity on-demand and incrementally grow their network capacity as traffic demands increase. Additional servers can be brought online seamlessly without significant impact to their operations or customers.

Chandra Kopparapu, Vice President of Sales and Marketing, Asia Pacific, for Foundry Networks added, ''We are pleased to be the networking solution provider for Baidu, the leading Chinese language Internet search provider. This mission critical installation reaffirms Foundry's leadership in offering high performance networking solutions in both the enterprise and service provider marketplace.''

Foundry Networks, Inc. is a provider of high-performance enterprise and service provider switching, routing, security, and Web traffic management solutions including Layer 2/3 LAN switches, Layer 3 Backbone switches, Layer 4 - 7 application switches, wireless LAN and access points, access routers and metro routers. Foundry's 10,000 customers include the world's premier ISPs, metro service providers, and enterprises including e-commerce sites, universities, entertainment, health and wellness, government, financial, and manufacturing companies.

In the China market, which boasts the fastest growth and the fiercest competition in the world, understanding how to provide the Chinese users with high-quality individualized, localized service has become a challenge for all manufacturers. The Baidu Internet search service has become the most used method of information gathering for PC users in China.
