PreFound.com Search Engine, Unveils Automatic Tagging
Lexington, Kentucky - September 28, 2006 - An automatic tagging system has been developed by search engine, PreFound, including the development of a collaborative vocabulary, designed to serve standardize tagging choices.
Automatic tagging, or the process of turning meta data into tagging data, is a crucial part of the widespread initiative to organize the Web. PreFound.com was built around tag-based search, not simply social bookmarking, and tag-based ''searching'' has been problematic from the beginning, according to some in the industry. Standardization among tags and tagging services is needed before tagging-based search is truly useful on a large scale.
People have a tendency to affect tagging-based search negatively in two primary ways: by not using enough or relevant tags; and by tagging the same links using vastly different tag words. To overcome these problems, PreFound.com crawls the web sites that users are indicating they would like to share, automatically adds tags based on site content, and then runs the site through a process much like a ''reverse thesaurus'' which reduces large numbers of synonyms into single "collabulary" words.
PreFound.com is a community-based search engine that helps people search for information other people have already found about their topic. PreFound.com endeavors to leverage the work already done by others and build on that base rather than start from scratch. PreFound.com features patented technology that enables its members (''Finders'') to tag and organize information they find on the Internet and share this information with others.
Steve Mansfield, CEO iLOR, LLC and PreFound.com explained, "If anyone believes that tag-based search on most sites is working well for the masses right now, then they just haven't done much searching on them. These are exactly the problems that PreFound.com is trying to solve with the advent of the PreFound.com collabulary and automatic tagging."
Specifically, PreFound addresses the problems with tag-based search in several ways:
-Group-based tagging. PreFound.com encourages users to utilize a few consistent tags for a group of links. This decreases the number of non-consistent tags for any particular link and clusters like links together by tag.
-PreFound.com crawls the pages that are going to be tagged by users and pre-tags the links with keywords that are consistent and relate to a consistent taxonomy. Users can edit them to ensure correctness of the system, but in this way PreFound.com takes another step in building a better way to tag.
-PreFound.com is working to ensure that "important" words in the title of any link become tags to the link. Incredibly, not using a word in the title of the page as a tag is one of the biggest omissions we see when people are tagging links to share with our community. Mr. Mansfield continued, "We're trying to make it easy for people to search information shared by the community. PreFound's end goal is to make the most stable and searchable tagging environment, with the most relevant information, available to our users."
