Memex Secure Search, Saves Sensitive Data
12/12/2006 - Memex Secure Search, Saves Sensitive Data
Vienna, Virginia - December 12, 2006 - Memex, Inc.'s new Intelligence Firewall, is designed to allow search query matches, while limiting the amount of detail returned, if access requires a security clearance, or if the data has been marked as sensitive.
The provider of intelligence management and analysis solutions, has created the new secure search solution, to conduct searches in environments where data is sensitive. Intelligence Firewall allows the searcher to know there is important information relevant to the search and instructs the searcher to contact the appropriate party to gain more detail. This capability strengthens search results by allowing all data to be searchable, while restricting the detail that is exposed.
For example, in law enforcement environments, there is often good intelligence arising from protected sources such as informants, yet the person who collects the data needs to shield the identity of the informant and may also need to restrict access to the intelligence. Using Memex's Intelligence Firewall feature, the analyst conducting the search would find that there is critical information available for a specific query and might see a message such as, ''A match has been found in your search for John Doe, but you must contact Lt. Smith to get the details.''
The major benefit of Intelligence Firewall is that system users are more likely to enter sensitive data if they know it can be kept confidential, controlled, and protected from unauthorized eyes. The person entering the data can limit access to just themselves, a small subset of individuals, or the entire search community. Therefore, the fear of entering data is removed and people are comfortable entering important intelligence data, improving the overall knowledge in the system.
Steve Serrao, Director of Intelligence Solutions at Memex remarked, ''The hidden flaw in most intelligence systems is that officers keep sensitive details of their criminal cases close to the vest. Officers simply don't want to risk compromising an investigation by writing up the details. However, once officers know they have control of the data, they are able to contribute the information to the intelligence database without risking their cases. That makes an intelligence system exponentially more powerful.''
As an additional layer of security, the owner of a record protected in this manner is alerted when the record has been presented as a search result. This notification can help bring together different jurisdictions or agencies to explore possible overlap on tips, leads and investigations.
Corporations also can benefit from Intelligence Firewall in instances where knowledge management employees need to find an answer, but the details might include sensitive HR information or privileged information that cannot be exposed to all levels of employees. Once it is determined that a search result exists, the data can be requested via the usual approval channels within the corporation.
