New York, New York - June 18, 2007 - The President and COO of hakia search engine, Melek Pulatkonak, recently presented at the Bear Stearns 2nd Annual Internet Conference, to discuss the search engine's advantages over legacy index-based search technologies.

According to Dr. Riza Berkan, CEO of hakia.com, "hakia.com algorithms understand the meaning of text by sentence analysis. This eliminates the need for cookies as we do not need to track user behavior to improve our algorithm. In some instances, when a user wants a personalized interface, for example, a cookie can be an added convenience. However, it is a private matter, up to the user, not up to us as a search provider." Thus, search engine, hakia.com, has developed a mechanism that does not insert cookies or use tracking mechanisms on computers by default, to understand search meanings. In the future, new hakia.com features will ask users' explicit permission to insert cookies if there is a need for it.

The Bear Stearns 2nd Annual Internet Conference, a focused two-day event, was held in conjunction with the Bear Stearns 18th Annual Technology/Communications/Internet Conference, at the Grand Hyatt New York, located at Grand Central Station on 42nd Street between Lexington and Park Avenues in New York City. Media sectors represented in the conference included: Advertising, Broadcasting, Broadband, Cable Networks, Film Production, Information Services, Interactive Entertainment, Marketing Services, Multiple System Operations, Outdoor, Publishing, Satellite, Radio and Yellow Pages.

Founder of hakia, Dr. Berkan is a nuclear scientist by training with a specialization in artificial intelligence and fuzzy logic. He is the author of several articles in this area, including the book Fuzzy Systems Design Principles published by IEEE in 1997. Between 1990 and 2000, Dr. Berkan worked as a subcontractor to the US Government and handled multiple Lockheed Martin Energy Systems and Westinghouse projects involving the Y-12 Plant, Savannah River Plant, and Los Alamos National Laboratory. Dr. Berkan holds a B.S. in Physics from Hacettepe University, Turkey and an M.S. and Ph.D. in Nuclear Engineering from the University of Tennessee with a specialization in Artificial Intelligence.

Founded in 2004, hakia developed its first meaning-based search engine, utilizing a new infrastructure, designed to deliver the most relevant search results. The company is privately held and based in New York City.
